3 ways to rock your postpartum recovery

3/4/2018

Picture
Having a baby is one of the most challenging things you’ll ever do.

Going through pregnancy, labour and delivery demands a lot from a woman - physically, mentally,  emotionally, and spiritually.

From the time we see that double line on the pregnancy test, many women spend hundreds of hours finding the right antenatal care providers. We read all the books, ask all the questions, and buy or borrow all the things we think a newborn baby needs

By the way, they mainly just need you, your boobs if you're breastfeeding / bottle if not, and your body warmth.

What we often fail to prepare ourselves for is what comes after the baby is born:

the months (and in some cases years) we spend recovering from this massive life event.

Our recovery from childbirth. The all important but under-acknowledged postpartum. And the desperate need we have, both as individuals and as a society, to nourish the mother during this time more than any other.

Superfoods: Are They Worth Your Money?

27/12/2017

Picture
If you read my stuff regularly, you probably already know how I feel about superfoods. This blog was originally posted in 2012 but seeing it's been 5 years and my views have changed slightly, I thought it deserved a shakeout and refresh!

WTF are superfoods, anyway?
Superfoods are simply foods that have a higher than average nutrient density, which leaves a wide scope for many different foods. Nowadays the word superfood brings to mind some relatively expensive powders, capsules, purees and juice concentrates.

Sedate brown-green powders and lifeless capsules wouldn’t be very sexy as stand alone items. So these products are cleverly marketed with the usual lethal gamut of “cutting edge” research, heavily photoshopped images of women in bikinis laughing at acai bowls who are conventionally attractive with just the right amount of exotic ethnicity - or male white bodybuilders with fake tans posing as Mayan warriors (hilarious)... and those words that appeal to the health nut in all of us: organic, pure, clean, paleo, concentrated, anti-ageing, antioxidant, and of course free of gluten, sugar, dairy, and all the rest of it.

Detoxification: so NOT about juice fasts & colonics

21/4/2017

Picture
When you hear the word "detoxification", what springs to mind? Juice fasting and colon cleanses? Coffee enemas and starvation? Health spas and slimming teas? For years, this is what I thought when I heard that oh-so-sexy-sounding word, and practised, much to my body's distress.

For the vast majority of people, these things are totally unnecessary - and they can actually set a person up for disordered eating and eating disorders.

When it comes to optimising your body’s detoxification processes, just doing a 3-day juice fast or a colonic – then going back to your normal diet – won’t cut it. It’s time to understand how our bodies really work, and what you can do to gently detoxify every day.

Heatwave food - Tom Yum Soup Recipe

10/2/2017

Picture
There’s one at every farmer’s market.

The quirky older man who lives in the bush and grows incredible finger limes.

The cute Thai / Filipino / Cambodian lady selling homegrown galangal, kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, and home made chilli sambals that can blow your brains out.

The Caribbean dude who sells all the cool spices that no one else has heard the name of, let alone tried.

You should visit that person’s stall.  And buy galangal, kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, and fresh chillies. As soon as humanly possible.

Why? You ask. Oh sweet reader, because then you can make Tom Yum soup, which is possibly the most delicious symphony of sweet, sour, salty, spicy, and something-I-can’t-describe-in-words, imaginable.

Dealing with infant fever and mummy burnout

29/10/2016

Archie was all better by the time this photo was taken - but he still liked his Lemon Balm & Chamomile tea!
A week of practical food and herbal remedies

The last week has felt like one big night out on the town, without the mood lifting substances! (they’re contraindicated when you’re breastfeeding – bugger). My 14 month-old has been fighting off a virus leaving him feverish, cranky and extremely clingy. Four days of severe sleep deprivation has gifted me with the under eye bags of an English bulldog with conjunctivitis.

Nights have been punctuated by the following tiring sleep-wake cycle of breast milk-soaked bibs and screaming: Archie wakes every hour (or what feels like every 10 minutes) crying inconsolably. Archie refuses the magical breast because he hates everything. Parents tag team rocking and singing him back to sleep. I breast pump so my boobs do not pop open with milk.  Archie finally falls back asleep on someone’s chest. Mummy about to drift off only to have Archie wake again with screams that would test the congeniality of the friendliest neighbour.
The days have been long and hard as he cried if we put him down for even a second. Add to that the unexpected ups and downs of normal life and you’ve got one very tired mumma (and – my partner’s edit - daddy!)

Any parent of little kids will be familiar with this scenario – and if you aren’t, you will be soon! (Oh YES, you WILL.) It’s stressful for everybody and I was eager for any kind of help I could get – nutritional, herbal, and emotional.

Luckily there exists an abundance of wonderful foods and herbs to help. This article covers what I did in the last week to help Archie deal with his mild fever (37.8 degrees Celsius at its highest point) and to support myself through the increased stress of it all. It is by no means a comprehensive “what to do” guide for fever in kids.

If your baby (over 6 months old) or child has a fever over 40 degrees Celsius, seek medical advice immediately. If your baby is under 6 months old and has a fever of any kind I suggest seeking medical advice just to be safe.

INTERGALACTIC CHOCOLATE TRUFFLES

24/4/2016

Picture
You know those times when you create something so unexpectedly delicious, so unapologetically radical, so exceptionally epic, that it makes you want to jump up in glee and dance like a Beastie Boy in a Japanese train station?

Well, this was one of those times.

The full moon in Aries raging at the moment might have me a little more excited than I otherwise would be. But trust me, these are worth the effort of washing (licking) chocolate truffle mix off of everything.

After seeing a few similar recipes pop up on my Instagram feed, I decided I had to try them. It took a few exposures to convince me because these babies contain one of the ingredients I have been scared - terrified, actually - to use in my food adventures. Powdered medicinal mushrooms.

Immune-boosting Shiitake & Veg Stir Fry

11/3/2016

Picture
Corresponding to my piece on 11 tips for a healthy autumn, here's one of my favourite autumn recipes, using the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, and based on a recipe from my Chinese-malay mum! It's quick, easy, and most importantly, delicious. And it's vegan so everyone can enjoy this one!

Shiitake mushrooms (Lentinula edodes) were a favourite ingredient in my mum's Chinese cooking while I was growing up, and I still love them today. They're packed with flavour, have a great chewy texture and make an incredible meat alternative.

Their powerful immune-modulating and anti-tumour actions make them ideal as an adjunct therapy in cancer, for fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Other medicinal mushrooms include maitake, reishi, and chaga. I often wonder how different our collective state of health would be if we routinely offered our kids traditional foods like these? I also chucked a little Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) in for extra mum-staying power!

Breastfeeding & BIrth Recovery

Nutrition, Herbs, and other Goodies for Postpartum Wellbeing

Picture
Learning together: it's been a bumpy road at times, but we are gradually getting the hang of this breastfeeding thing!
When I was pregnant, everything was about the birth. Meeting my baby was to be the summit of the whole experience of conception plus nine roller-coaster months of pregnancy. All the books I read were about healthy pregnancy, prenatal yoga, and active birth. I barely gave a thought to breastfeeding and everything else that would follow the peak experience of birthing a human being.

When well-meaning friends with kids repeatedly suggested we prepare meals and freeze them to prepare for the hectic few weeks that follow a child's arrival, we nodded our heads and promptly forgot their advice, foolishly thinking that surely we'd have time to shop, cook and clean whilst learning how to be parents and suddenly becoming full-time carers to a tiny human.

Wild Skin Beautifying Smoothie

WILD SKIN BEAUTIFYING SMOOTHIE with Schizandra berry, Aloe Vera and Cacao
Without a doubt this is the wildest smoothie I've made this year! I'm really enjoying using more herbs and plant extracts in my green smoothies lately. Plus it makes for some wild concoctions!

Learning more about herbs from my naturopath-student boyfriend has not only encouraged me to start a naturopathy degree next semester.

It's also getting me
experimenting more in the kitchen. Something I've really, really missed. It helps that I now have access to an amazing blender and a full indoor kitchen, having moved out of my forest caravan and back into civilisation last week!

Schizandra berry is an adaptogen, meaning it helps you adapt to physical and emotional stress. It's also an incredible liver tonic and antioxidant, assisting with both phase 1 and 2 liver detoxification. Healthy liver function is vital for great skin, because if your liver isn't detoxifying properly toxins will use the skin as a back up escape route, meaning breakouts and rashes. I used the powdered berry in this super smoothie.

You can buy ground up, dried schizandra berry from health food shops. Or you can order it
through australherbs.com.au for around $11 for 250 grams.

Aloe Vera gel straight from the plant contains polysaccharides that lubricate the skin, joints and nervous system, giving your skin that dewy look. Anti-inflammatory aloe is also epic for healing the gut and is an amazing immune-modulator, meaning it helps bring an deficient immune system back to normal boosting your ability to fight bacterial and viral infections.

Raw cacao nibs are high in antioxidants such as Vitamin, C, as well as minerals magnesium, iron, and zinc - all crucial for healthy skin.

This smoothie was delicious and the perfect post-gardening breakfast! Here's the recipe:

INGREDIENTS

2 cups organic frozen mixed berries
2 frozen bananas
1/2 a cucumber
1 tablespoon dried ground schizandra berry
1/4 leaf fresh aloe vera gel
2 teaspoons raw cacao nibs
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon powder
1/2 cup organic coconut milk

10 drops liquid stevia or sweetener of choice
filtered water to blend
PREPARATION

Blend all ingredients in a high powdered blender until smooth. Serves 2 happy smoothie lovers!
