Casey Conroy first tried yoga at age 14, when she attended a gold coin donation Seniors yoga class in the small town she grew up in. She began teaching yoga in her early twenties and is approaching her fifteenth year sharing this ever-metamorphosing form of mindful movement and self-inquiry.
She is inspired by her own life's journey, including full recovery from disordered eating, having babies, and her current work as a chocolate-loving, HAES-aligned, body positive dietitian. She has a passion for helping people feel more confident and capable in their bodies... no matter how they appear from the outside.
During her first few years of teaching, Casey followed the well-worn path of travelling the world to learn and teach yoga, doing everything a good yoga person is meant to do: drink kale juice, crack lots of handstands, go vegan, and teach in an obnoxiously Zen voice.
After a while, she grew tired of trying to be the perfect yogini (not to mention very hungry).
A once avid practitioner of dynamic vinyasa yoga (and ex-purveyor of mainstream yoga culture), Casey found her practice radically upturned following the birth of her first child, Archie. The strict alignment cues and highly choreographed style she was familiar with no longer worked for her changing body. And so she began to integrate other movement modalities into her own personal practice, from pilates to powerlifting. She stopped getting injured, and started feeling strong and confident.
As a result of this exploration, Casey's teaching style evolved. In her classes she complements yoga asana with strength training, eastern energetics, mindfulness, mobility, biomechanics, and body acceptance. To complement her yoga teacher trainings, she has completed a Level 1 ASCA Strength & Conditioning Coaching certification and has recently begun offering fitness classes to help people feel strong and capable in their bodies.
Her sessions are creative, paradigm-challenging, inclusive and deeply nourishing. In class you may find yourself surprisingly massaging yourself or pressing a kettlebell above your head... but you will never hear her say the words “detox”, “get back on track”, or “work it off”. Ever.
Casey no longer subscribes to #YogaEveryDamnDay and "eating clean". She understands that burgers, nanna naps, and just enjoying your damn life go right alongside staying mobile, strong and healthy (and can in fact, enable this). She believes that we can learn a great deal about how to best care for ourselves from observing our own inner cycles and those of Mother Nature, from ancient traditions and modern science, and from truly listening to our amazing and ridiculously intelligent bodies.
Casey has been leading yoga workshops, classes, retreats and festival events in Australia and South East Asia since 2006. She has trained with Cora Wen, Gwyn Williams, and Jason Nemer - but by far her greatest teachers are her kids.
