Dietetics is the branch of knowledge concerned with the diet and its effects on health, especially with the application of scientific understanding of nutrition.
A consultation with a dietitian can assist anyone who wants to improve their health and nutrition through food and lifestyle change, supporting people to build a healthy relationship with food and with their bodies.
Dietetic therapy not only focuses on food and eating but can also address concerns about body image, weight, physical activities and thought patterns that may be preventing people from living a healthy balanced life.

Dietitians & nutritionists: what's the difference?
In Australia all dietitians are nutritionists however nutritionists without a dietetics qualification cannot take on the expert role of a dietitian. The key difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist is that, in addition to or as part of their qualification in human nutrition, a dietitian has undertaken a course of study that included substantial theory and supervised and assessed professional practice in clinical nutrition, medical nutrition therapy and food service management.
Dietitians in Australia who meet strict criteria are eligible to join the Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) program. APD is the only credential for dietitians recognised by Medicare and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) and many private health insurers.
