Why I ate my placenta.

31/10/2015

Placenta snaps, sliced and dehydrated by my fiancee, then placed in a container with salt to absorb any lingering moisture. I cut slivers into a green smoothie and blend it well.
This is easily the weirdest, freakiest post I have ever written. But given that it's Samhain or Halloween today, it's kind of fitting!

The main reasons some new mothers throughout the western world are embracing placentophagy (the practice of mammals eating the placenta of their young after giving birth) centre around these: mood stabilisation and improvement which may reduce risk of postpartum depression, and nutrient replenishment after birth which can help with energy levels, recovery, and breast milk production.

Despite these purported benefits, I still struggle with how to explain my decision to eat my own placenta. Even though I instinctively felt it was the right decision for me, I had to do my own research to satisfy my left brain. So let me start off with the reasons why I initially thought I would not eat my placenta.

Nutrition, Herbs, and other Goodies for Postpartum Wellbeing

Learning together: it's been a bumpy road at times, but we are gradually getting the hang of this breastfeeding thing!
When I was pregnant, everything was about the birth. Meeting my baby was to be the summit of the whole experience of conception plus nine roller-coaster months of pregnancy. All the books I read were about healthy pregnancy, prenatal yoga, and active birth. I barely gave a thought to breastfeeding and everything else that would follow the peak experience of birthing a human being.

When well-meaning friends with kids repeatedly suggested we prepare meals and freeze them to prepare for the hectic few weeks that follow a child's arrival, we nodded our heads and promptly forgot their advice, foolishly thinking that surely we'd have time to shop, cook and clean whilst learning how to be parents and suddenly becoming full-time carers to a tiny human.

Baby Archie's Birth Story

5/10/2015

Picture
Archie, our angel at 2 days old.
It's Saturday afternoon and I'm looking out the main window of our cosy forest shack at the sun dappling through the trees, and reflecting off a little billabong. It's warm and quiet except for the washing machine tumbling a load of towels that were used during the home birth part of the massive experience my fiancée and I have just shared.

I'm on my laptop snacking on cold watermelon and generally, everything is pretty much the same as it always is. Except when I look down, there's a tiny baby attached to me via a second hand bamboo wrap, asleep after having a feed. He is my two day old son. It's blowing my mind but at the same time feels as utterly normal as the simple home life I'm used to.

Our little angel Archie Forest Kuhn was born on Thursday October 1st, after 39 weeks and 2 days gestation, weighing 2.64kg and besides being on the small side, he was healthy. Here's how his birth story unfolded, teaching Andreas and I so many lessons and giving us a hearty dose of spiritual growth!
