Herbs for Handling Stress

15/10/2019

Picture
Forget asbestos, Roundup on our vegetables, and mercury fillings: by the year 2020 the most threatening health hazard known to humans is predicted to be stress. Already a major cause of disease, chronic stress sets off a cascade of long-term chemical changes that can spell disease and inflammation for your body, and disintegration of the spirit.

So what’s a human living in the 21st century to do? Aside from lifestyle interventions – such as healthy diet, regular movement, strong social support networks, mind-body practices, and adequate rest – there are certain herbs that can help us to manage the high levels of stress we inevitably face in this day and age.

Rather than indiscriminately throwing a bunch of herbal powders and potions down the hatch and hoping for the best, it is important to know about the three stages of stress adaptation your body experiences as different herbs are most effective at different stages.

Intermittent fasting - rad or fad?

26/6/2019

Picture
Intermittent fasting (or IF for short) is so hot right now. In fact it's been hot since it rose to fame with the arrival of Michael Mosley on the television and book publishing scene in 2012.

Basically, it means going an extended period without eating. Sounds technical AF, right? (Unlike plain ol' healthy eating and regular movement, which is clearly not sexy enough to attract the attention of the masses!)

IF is fancy-sounding enough to get the attention of those who want the next magic bullet that will help them lose weight and/or get healthier.

So, nearly everyone.

But especially those who already have issues with weight concern, body image, disordered eating or eating disorders - the folks I see the most often.

In actuality, almost all of us intermittently fast. Every night. When we are asleep. Not so sexy, I know. So let's talk a bit about the sexier, newer, more restrictive version.

Dealing with infant fever and mummy burnout

29/10/2016

Archie was all better by the time this photo was taken - but he still liked his Lemon Balm & Chamomile tea!
A week of practical food and herbal remedies

The last week has felt like one big night out on the town, without the mood lifting substances! (they’re contraindicated when you’re breastfeeding – bugger). My 14 month-old has been fighting off a virus leaving him feverish, cranky and extremely clingy. Four days of severe sleep deprivation has gifted me with the under eye bags of an English bulldog with conjunctivitis.

Nights have been punctuated by the following tiring sleep-wake cycle of breast milk-soaked bibs and screaming: Archie wakes every hour (or what feels like every 10 minutes) crying inconsolably. Archie refuses the magical breast because he hates everything. Parents tag team rocking and singing him back to sleep. I breast pump so my boobs do not pop open with milk.  Archie finally falls back asleep on someone’s chest. Mummy about to drift off only to have Archie wake again with screams that would test the congeniality of the friendliest neighbour.
The days have been long and hard as he cried if we put him down for even a second. Add to that the unexpected ups and downs of normal life and you’ve got one very tired mumma (and – my partner’s edit - daddy!)

Any parent of little kids will be familiar with this scenario – and if you aren’t, you will be soon! (Oh YES, you WILL.) It’s stressful for everybody and I was eager for any kind of help I could get – nutritional, herbal, and emotional.

Luckily there exists an abundance of wonderful foods and herbs to help. This article covers what I did in the last week to help Archie deal with his mild fever (37.8 degrees Celsius at its highest point) and to support myself through the increased stress of it all. It is by no means a comprehensive “what to do” guide for fever in kids.

If your baby (over 6 months old) or child has a fever over 40 degrees Celsius, seek medical advice immediately. If your baby is under 6 months old and has a fever of any kind I suggest seeking medical advice just to be safe.

Metallica & Meditation – the Parallels

1/6/2016

If meditation were a musical genre I dare say it would be metal and all of its sub genres. Here’s a few reasons why.

Picture
I love metal music. Mostly good old stuff like Metallica, but also alternative metal, and a little bit of crazy glam metal. I love that it can be dark, gritty, and sinister… or energising and transcendental, depending on which genre and artist you listen to. Its wide spectrum of emotive expression mirrors and brings to light the psychological reality of most human beings.

When we meditate, we shine a bright stage light onto this same reality.

Meditation is instinctive, natural, and expressive. People slip into meditative states spontaneously whilst watching a sunrise, listening to a brilliant crescendo of riffs and drums at a concert, or lying in bed after lovemaking. Even whilst experiencing a car crash recently, time seemed to slow down and for a brief moment, I was hyper-aware of what was going on.

My Second Trimester

25 week baby bump
Today, I'm nearly 28 weeks pregnant. But it seems as if it were just yesterday when I saw two lines on the pregnancy test, confirming what I had intuitively felt for some time before that. I've since learnt that pregnancy is a sifting of the unsorted material of one's psyche to reveal the dross. Dross that must be burnt before a new life can enter the world under your care. A process as necessary as it is painful, uncomfortable, thrilling and insight-revealing.

Pregnancy: a sorting of the psyche, a polishing of the soul.

3 WAYS TO AVOID MELTDOWN

17/1/2015

Seeing the word "stress" is stressful. So here's a beautiful scene to soften the blow.
Stress.

It affects each and every one of us in orders of magnitude which we often underestimate.

Late last year, I found myself studying full time and working full time, whilst trying to juggle all the usual demands of life such as visiting family during the busy Christmas season (I did full time online university all through the holidays - yes, I know, insane! Oh and we moved house.) I was cranky with my partner, tired nearly all of the time and I could feel and see my body holding onto more water and fat.

(Note: I was pregnant at the time of writing this but I didn't yet know it! This could have explained some of the changes in body composition and my emotional state...)
