15 Benefits of Strength Training That Have Nothing to Do With How You Look

20/8/2020

As a movement teacher of over a decade, I am a strong believer in the benefits of moving our bodies in ways that enhance our joy, health, and overall quality of life.

Strength and Conditioning does this.

The application of sports science to movement, Strength and Conditioning - or S&C for short - is a wonderful way to make positive and significant changes to your multiple facets of your wellbeing - not just physical strength.

You can benefit from Strength and Conditioning whether you're an athlete, a weekend warrior, or just a regular human looking to feel stronger and more capable in your body.

All bodies can benefit from this type of training. You can benefit if you're a yogi who has never touched a weight before. You can benefit if you're in a larger body. You can benefit if you're an older person. Or you're peri-menopausal. You can benefit if you're in a disabled body.

You can benefit even if your previous experience with bootcamps, weight rooms and WODs has been intimidating and off-putting (I know mine had been!).

A previously die-hard yoga purist, I now bring elements of S&C into my yoga classes such as strength training and mobility. And the feedback I've received is overwhelmingly positive. So much so that I'm now undergoing my Level 1 Strength & Conditioning coaching certification and will shortly start offering classes that focus purely on accessible Strength and Conditioning for all bodies!

But before I get all excited about that, we need to answer a few questions you may have, starting with...

Ep 14. PERFORMATIVE ACTIVISM: FEIGNED ANTI-RACISM & WHITE SUPREMACY IN YOGA

9/8/2020

There has been a phenomenal uptick of rising yoga and wellness influencers posting anti-racism sentiments on social media. Yet in stark contrast to the important message of bringing light to police brutality against BIPOC, or tackling underrepresentation of coloured folks in wellness spaces, these feeds are filled with white, thin, able-bodied, cis-het women striking yoga poses on beaches. The question is: are these influencers for real?

In this episode:
  • The rise of performative activism in yoga social media, and why it comes across as disingenuous
  • How white yoga and wellness influencers can leverage their privilege to do better
  • My personal experiences of racism growing up, how these pale in comparison to those of BIPOC, and how I'm responding to racial injustice
  • The damage done by sentiments like, “No One Is Superior”, "We Are All One", or "I Don't See Colour"
  • An example of feigned anti-racism in an Australian context
  • Spiritual capitalism and the ways white supremacy manifests IRL white yoga studio culture
  • 3 tactics of defence and dismissal used by white wellness influencers to deflect accountability around racism
  • Folks who are doing excellent work in allyship, de-centering themselves, raising the voices of BIPOC, and/or speaking out as BIPOC wellness and yoga influencers themselves

Resources mentioned:
  • Dianne Bondy on challenging racism and spiritual bypassing, on the triyoga podcast
  • Acknowledgment of Country by Georgia Mae Capocchi-Hunter

Performative Activism: Feigned Anti-Racism & White Supremacy in Yoga

Lokah Samastah Sukinho Bhavantu

In contemporary yoga classes everywhere, teachers and students recite this popular Sanskrit chant. It roughly translates to May All Beings Everywhere Be Happy and Free.

We can assume that "all beings" includes trans folks, disabled folks, larger bodied folks, and BIPOC.

Yet woven into the cultural fabric of the rapidly expanding territory where yoga, wellness, and spirituality surreptitiously collide, lies a long history of ignoring privilege, and sidestepping conversations about intersectional systems of oppression.

In particular, there has been an uptick of Black Lives Matter meme reposts by rising spiritual and wellness influencers. On reading the captions (or lack thereof) that accompany many of these posts, what
becomes apparent is a distinct failure by the influencer to grasp the gravitas behind them.

And sometimes a tangible lack of any actual fu@ks being given.
