If there was only one thing I could take back with me from north Queensland, it's the sun! If I could choose a close second, it would be the warmth and hospitality of my old friends, in particular my childhood bestie Renee... and her mum's delicious cooking!
Renee's mum, Celeste is Sicilian and makes amazing pasta and Italian food. Think cream, pasta, bread, breadcrumbs, mince, carnation milk and lots of olive oil. White pasta isn't something I include in my everyday diet, but when something's made with that much love, tradition and expertise, I can't say no!
When presented with Celeste's non-organic, white flour- and dairy-containing Italian cuisine, I dug in. Wholeheartedly. I eat healthy and organic, but not all the time. I love creamy and rich food, food that is bursting with flavour, exotic and international cuisine.
I never hold back from tasting what I want and from having what I want. I feel so abundant and excited when I eat food that I absolutely love. I indulge myself, I don’t worry and I don’t have regrets about it.
When I eat to feel satisfied, I never overeat. Deprivation has no part in a healthy, sustainable way of eating. I like to teach my clients how they can eat for pleasure AND for health.
Of course, developing a good relationship with food isn't the only factor. Having a good relationship to your body means taking it for a walk everyday - daily exercise helps you to make healthier food choices. Most mornings while I was in Townsville were spent running or hiking up the various hills that are dotted across the sunny city - Mt Louisa was my favourite, and I enjoyed nearly a week of sunrises overlooking the bay. Bliss! I also rate Castle Hill, a tough, short and sharp run and favourite with the locals, with a killer view from the top.
Gorging on pasta out of a packet as part of a self-punishing binge is going to have a different effect on your body to eating homemade pasta in the company of loving friends and family and balanced with enjoyable movement. When you start to understand how your relationship to food impacts on your health, you will uncover the keys to creating lifelong healthy habits.
With extra love to all my Italian and Greek food-loving family and friends!
